Federal charges filed against ex-Kansas doctor in connection with 1989 rape case

A former Kansas doctor, Frederick Louis Tanzer, residing in Ohio, has been indicted by a federal grand jury on Friday. The six-count indictment stems from his DNA being linked to a rape case that occurred in 1989.

Tanzer allegedly lied to federal investigators regarding his interactions with the victim on the day she was assaulted. He faces charges for making false statements to a government agency or officer, as well as for creating or using a false document. If convicted, each count could result in a maximum prison sentence of five years. It is important to note that federal crimes can still be prosecuted, even if the original offense is beyond the statute of limitations.

Dr. Tanzer, a medical doctor, has experience practicing in Ohio, Kansas, and Colorado. The Kansas Board of Healing Arts confirms that he obtained his medical license in 2015 and renewed it in 2024. Currently, he serves as a hospitalist at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. Unfortunately, his biography on the hospital’s website is unavailable at the moment.

During the execution of the search warrant at Tanzer’s residence in Sycamore Township, Ohio, on December 11th, investigators discovered a collection of items inside Tanzer’s dresser. These items included restraints, a gag, a black hat, and zip ties.

Federal law enforcement officials are urging the public to carefully reflect upon the circumstances surrounding the rapes and the various locations where Tanzer has resided. If anyone has any similar information, they are strongly encouraged to reach out to the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
