A Virginia man is facing prison time for taking classified documents, the Department of Justice said in a press release.
According to court documents, 51-year-old Gokhan Gun took at least five classified documents from his Department of Defense workstation in May 2022 and brought them home, which is not permitted.
The Falls Church resident was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and holds dual citizenship in both Turkey and the United States. Gun had Top Secret security clearance and access to Sensitive Compartmented Information as a result of his position.
Gun planned to fly to Mexico on August 9, 2024. Before Gun could depart, FBI investigators watching the scenario noticed a ride-sharing vehicle arrive at his house and contacted him.
When the agents entered his home, they discovered a top-secret document, a notepad with handwritten notes that resembled a top-secret report in a backpack, and classified documents in his kitchen.
Gun faces a maximum sentence of five years in jail. He is set to be sentenced on June 17.
