Residents in Central Texas are experiencing an unexpected invasion of scorpions this summer, as they are spotting more of these arachnids in their homes.
According to a recent report by KXAN Austin, the pest control team at ABC Homes and Commercial Services is receiving an increased number of calls for scorpion removal services this season.
According to Alan Brown, a board certified entomologist with ABC, the intense heat is causing these creatures to seek refuge indoors. As Brown explained to KXAN, “As it gets hotter and drier outside, they look for a cooler environment to inhabit.”
According to Dave Moellendorf, owner of Zookeeper Exotic Pets, scorpions have been forced out of their natural habitats due to heavy rains and subsequent flooding earlier this year. It’s not just the rising temperatures that are contributing to the increase in scorpion sightings.
Scorpions are known to seek shelter under rocks, but they can also mistakenly find their way into homes that offer similar refuge from the heat.
According to Arizona Central, these creatures have a preference for damp environments and can be found in unexpected places like your shower, toilet, or swimming pool. Interestingly, they can even float on water despite not being strong swimmers.
In order to prevent scorpions from entering your home, it is crucial to seal any cracks present. According to Brown, using typical pesticides may not be effective against scorpions, and therefore, it is recommended to use specialized scorpion treatments.
Trimming trees away from windows and roofs can be an effective way to prevent scorpions from entering your home.
Investing in a black light is a great way to spot scorpions. These arachnids have the ability to glow in the dark when exposed to a black light, which makes them much easier to see.
