Ex-boyfriend sentenced after 16-year-old girl tells him, “Make sure you kill me next time you point a gun at me,” and he shoots her in the head when she steps outside to meet a friend

Ex-boyfriend sentenced after 16-year-old girl tells him, "Make sure you kill me next time you point a gun at me," and he shoots her in the head when she steps outside to meet a friend.

In a tragic incident in Texas, a 29-year-old man, I. Vargas, was sentenced to prison for the murder of his 16-year-old ex-girlfriend, L. Sandoval, highlighting the extreme consequences of relationship violence and online disputes.

The crime occurred on a September evening in 2018, when Sandoval was shot in the head by Vargas, then 22, whom she had been in a relationship with for about a year. The murder resulted from a heated exchange that escalated into violence, underscoring the destructive impact of domestic abuse. Their relationship had been rocky, with one disturbing event where Vargas had held a gun to Sandoval’s head. This violent act was a turning point for Sandoval, prompting her to end things. Their final interaction took place over Facebook messages on the night of her death. In their conversation, Sandoval confronted Vargas about the gun incident:

Vargas: “I thought you were going to be with me earlier.”
Sandoval: “Lol when. When you were about to shoot me?”
Vargas: “Yes when I had the gun to your head, that’s why I put it down cuz I thought you meant it.”
Sandoval: “Next time you point a gun at me, make sure you kill me cause I’m never talking to you again.”
Vargas: “Damn bro.”

Soon after, Vargas sent Sandoval a disturbing photo of himself holding a gun to his head with the caption, “Life ain’t worth living without you.” Alarmed, Sandoval shared the messages and photo with a friend, expressing her concern.

Later that night, after the intense exchange, Sandoval stepped outside to meet a friend in a car. Vargas, who had been waiting nearby, confronted her. In a shocking act of violence, he grabbed her by the shoulder and shot her in the face. The horrific moment was witnessed by the friend in the car, marking the devastating end of a young life. Vargas fled the scene, but the police later apprehended him. During the trial, Vargas was charged with first-degree murder and found guilty after a five-day trial. The jury delivered a unanimous verdict, sentencing him to 75 years in prison, with a minimum of 30 years before he could be considered for parole.

This case drew widespread attention to the severe consequences of domestic violence. Assistant DA P. White, who led the prosecution, spoke about the predatory nature of Vargas’s actions, noting the deliberate steps he took to end Sandoval’s life after she ended the relationship. Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg expressed profound sorrow over the tragedy, recognizing the loss to the community and the void left by Sandoval’s death. Her memory lives on in the community and her school, where she was remembered as a bright and promising young woman. This case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of domestic violence and the need to identify and act on early warning signs. As the community mourns her loss, the message remains clear: no one should ever suffer such violence, and justice must be served to protect future victims and punish those who perpetrate such acts.
