With Domestic Violence Awareness Month just around the corner in October, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County took to Twitter to address the issue of teen dating violence. The sheriff’s message comes in the wake of a tragic incident where a 17-year-old girl lost her life in east Harris County at the hands of her 21-year-old boyfriend.
Harris County Sheriffs have reported that Brittany Dubon, a 17-year-old girl, lost her life on Richard St in Baytown due to her 21-year-old boyfriend, Tomas Bautista.
Neighbors and a trauma therapist we spoke to on Sunday are expressing their concern over the need to put an end to this ongoing violence. Thelma Johnson, a neighbor, claimed that the person made an attempt to flee by running away, but authorities eventually caught up with him.
Thelma Johnson was at home when she witnessed the events that unfolded at the end of her block on Sunday morning. It came as no surprise to her.
Johnson expressed his frustration with the behavior of the young kids in his neighborhood. Despite being well-mannered, they seem to be inclined towards engaging in inappropriate activities. Johnson has made several attempts to talk to them and offer guidance, but unfortunately, they have been unwilling to listen to his advice.
Chau Nguyen, a Trauma Therapist, emphasized the need for more discussions about domestic violence, especially in light of the recent murder of a 17-year-old.
Seeking Help for Domestic Violence: What You Need to Know
Nguyen emphasized the importance of predictability in preventing incidents. According to him, when a situation becomes predictable, it also becomes preventable. He further explained this by pointing out that if someone has access to a gun and there are indications or rumors about their intentions, it is crucial for someone to take action and report it.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of Harris County expressed the significance of aiding children in identifying the initial indications of abusive behavior through a tweet. This message highlights the crucial nature of this task, as affirmed by Nguyen.
According to Nguyen, there are various resources available for teenagers to seek help and support when it comes to different forms of teen dating violence. This includes online dating violence, stalking, and harassment. If something doesn’t feel right, Nguyen encourages teens to speak up and reach out for support. Whether it’s through non-profit organizations, the mental health community, friends, or teachers, it’s important to share concerns with someone who can help.
According to the Harris County Sheriffs, Bautista has been charged with murder and is currently held at the Harris County Jail.
