Indianapolis cyclists are reporting coyote attacks at Town Run Trail Park.
Located on the northeast side of the city, Town Run Trail Park boasts a 7.25-mile loop that is perfect for mountain biking and running enthusiasts. This park is a popular spot for avid trail riders who frequent it on a daily basis.
According to John Leonard, a local mountain biker, bicyclists have been reporting coyote attacks for the past month.
According to Leonard, the coyotes hold the upper hand in terms of attacking you due to the design of the trail.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources states that coyotes are usually observed during the early morning and evening hours.
It’s unusual to see coyotes out in the open during the day, but lately, visitors to Town Run Trail Park have reported sightings.
Coyotes have a tendency to consume small mammals, such as squirrels and rabbits.
Furthermore, according to DNR, coyotes usually steer clear of humans and are quite difficult to spot.
Leonard acknowledged the inherent risks of the sport and added, “Usually, encounters with snakes, the occasional bald eagle, and deer are common out here. However, this year, coyotes have become a new addition to the list of animals we encounter.”
With the recent attacks happening, individuals are being more careful while cycling.
Leonard stated that while there are individuals who choose to carry guns or knives, he personally opts to carry a spare pump as his preferred means of protection against coyote attacks.
