A man was apprehended on Sunday after reportedly attempting to smuggle methamphetamine across the Texas-Mexico border.
Customs and Border Protection refers to the suspect as a “cheeky smuggler” because of the unusual way he attempted to cross the border with the drugs.
“Cheeky Smuggler” busted in El Paso
The 26-year-old U.S. citizen was apprehended after heading to the Ysleta border crossing in El Paso shortly after 4 a.m. on Sunday.
Following an interview, a CBP officer picked the individual for a secondary examination.
A drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to the presence of narcotics on the man.
A pat down by an officer revealed two items “concealed between the man’s buttocks,” according to a Customs and Border Protection release.
After some testing, officers established that the shipments contained approximately one-third of a pound of meth.
We anticipate charging the arrested individual with importing a controlled drug.
What we don’t know: The suspect’s name has not been disclosed.
What they’re saying: “The keen observational skills of a CBP officer resulted in this seizure being made,” said CBP Ysleta Port Director Arnie Gomez in a statement. “Body carriers are a challenge however our mix of officer expertise, canine support, and tools and technology all assist us in identifying and stopping these types of smuggling attempts.”
