“He told people Jesus died with an erection,” a churchgoer revealed.
“The church was shocked. There were young families present.”
The reverend, 53, explained that Jesus might have died with an erection due to the violent execution method. He claimed that blood would have rushed to Jesus’s lower body as he hung on the crucifix.
Post-mortem erections are common in men who have died from hanging or suffocation, including crucifixion, according to some studies.
While it remains uncertain if Jesus experienced this response, the diocese of Hexham & Newcastle deemed the speculation inappropriate for Easter services.
“A complaint was received and investigated according to our diocesan complaints policy. The investigation has been recently completed, and the complaint is upheld,” a spokesperson for the diocese told The Times.
“Father McHale has accepted that his words were inappropriate and has apologized. He remains in his position as parish priest.”
