Bureau of Land Management auctions off wild horses rounded up across Nevada

The Bureau of Land Management has successfully auctioned off wild horses and provided them with new homes.

BLM officials have confirmed that the auction took place on Saturday at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center.

In Nevada, Oregon, and California, the Bureau of Land Management rounded up wild horses from herd management areas. Afterward, inmates trained the horses for approximately four months before the auction.

Jenny Lesieutre, BLM Nevada’s Wild Horse and Burro Public Affairs Specialist, expressed her excitement about the event’s outcome and the turnout of the public. She noted that the weather was amazing and that witnessing the inmates and animals’ accomplishments was truly inspiring. According to Lesieutre, the horses and burros are now ready to be placed in wonderful homes where they can use their training to excel in any task given to them.

According to BLM Officials, the animals that were brought in fetched a total of $94,750, with the highest bid being $16,500 for a horse named “Queen Bee” from the Diamond Hills North herd management area. Once the animals are adopted, the new owners are required to provide proper care for them for a year before becoming eligible to receive title or ownership from the federal government.

Most animals that are up for adoption usually come from herds that have become overpopulated on public lands. As the herd populations grow, the available vegetation and water become scarce, which prompts the need to find new homes for these animals.

Since 1971, private care has taken in more than 313,000 wild horses and burros, as reported by the BLM.
