Denton, Texas – Severe storms on Monday morning caused the closure of two major highways in North Texas.
The southbound lanes of I-35 were shut down at Milam Road in Denton after two 18-wheeler trucks were overturned. According to the Denton Police Department, one of the trucks, a Walmart vehicle, fell onto a pickup truck. The incident occurred sometime after 9 a.m. Monday when strong winds and gusts from a squall line passed through the area.
The Denton Fire Department responded to the scene for hazmat cleanup. Authorities confirmed the highway would remain closed for several hours.
With no service road available, drivers traveling from Sanger to Denton can use Cowling Road or Rector Road as alternate routes to bypass the crash site and get back on I-35.
Westbound 635 Closed
A separate 18-wheeler was blown over across the westbound lanes of 635 near Valley View Road, close to the Farmers Branch, Dallas, and Irving border.
Westbound traffic on 635 is being redirected to exit at Valley View Road, the President George Bush Turnpike, or Las Colinas Boulevard.
There is no estimate for when the highway will reopen.
