Billionaire Elon Musk Announces Move of SpaceX and X Headquarters to Texas

Elon Musk revealed on X Tuesday that SpaceX will relocate its headquarters from Hawthorne, California, to its rocket launch site, Starbase, in Texas. Additionally, X will shift its base from San Francisco to Austin.

Musk criticized a new California law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which prevents school districts from informing parents about changes in their child’s gender identification. Musk called this legislation the “final straw.”

“I made it clear to Governor Newsom about a year ago that such laws would compel families and businesses to leave California to safeguard their children,” Musk stated.

Tesla, where Musk is CEO, moved its headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin in 2021.

Musk has also mentioned relocating his personal residence to Texas, which does not have a state personal income tax.

SpaceX builds and launches its massive Starship rockets from the southern tip of Texas at Boca Chica Beach, near the Mexican border, at a site known as Starbase. The company’s smaller Falcon 9 rockets are launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Southern California.

Starbase is located just below South Padre Island and about 20 miles from Brownsville.
