Authorities have charged a New York City police officer with attempted murder on Friday. The incident occurred in New Jersey where the officer allegedly shot another driver during a road rage incident and then fled the scene.
Hieu Tran, an officer assigned to the social media unit of the New York Police Department’s press office, is currently awaiting extradition to Camden County, New Jersey. The shooting incident occurred on the night of May 17th.
According to a statement from the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, while responding to a multicar crash on Route 73, officers from the Voorhees Township Police Department discovered that one of the drivers involved in the accident had sustained a gunshot wound prior to the collision.
Authorities reported on Friday that the victim of the shooting had been taken to a hospital and was still receiving medical attention.
On Friday, Tran made an appearance at an extradition hearing in Manhattan after being arrested the previous day at NYPD headquarters.
According to The Daily News, Tran kept his head down for most of his court appearance.
Tran’s attorney refrained from commenting on the charges during the hearing.
According to the NYPD, Tran has been suspended without pay.
