Alabama’s sole federally and state-permitted commercial shark fishing vessel is the “Orca” located in Bon Secour.
The boat managed to catch its limit of sharks in just four hours on Tuesday.
Just a few miles away from Dauphin Island, Apex Shark Fishing Charters employs a 125-hook, two-mile bottom-long line for their fishing trips. They specialize in shark fishing and are experts in their field.
The “Orca” hit her limit rather quickly due to the fact that using this technique enabled them to fish a significant amount of gear over an extended period of water.
Lew Childre from Apex Shark Fishing proudly claims that their boat is the only one in Alabama dedicated solely to shark fishing. He believes that the strict regulations that have limited shark quotas for a long time are unnecessary since there are plenty of sharks in the area.
According to Childre, the exploding population of sharks can be attributed to this reason.
According to him, the reason behind the increase in the shark population on the beach is simply due to the reduction in fishing activities and the frequent presence of people. This has resulted in a greater opportunity for interaction between humans and the sharks that inhabit the area.
During this season, the Gulf of Mexico becomes a prime spot for shark migration. The area is home to around fifty different species of sharks, with over two dozen commonly found along the Alabama coast.
During a usual excursion, the “Orca” catches a variety of shark species, including blacktips, spinners, finetooth, hammerheads, and sometimes even bull sharks.
Captain David Stiller spends up to five days a week fishing during the summer. Once fall arrives, he moves to federal waters to catch as many sharks as legally permitted.
Childre cautions that despite efforts to protect against them, there are still numerous sharks present in the environment.
He emphasized that people should not be fearful of these organisms. Instead, they should consider them as a valuable resource and a remarkable representation of biology and ecology.
After the fishermen bring the catch back to the docks, the shark meat undergoes processing and is subsequently sold to markets located in Canada and New York.
