Agents say they charged a man with abusing a vulnerable adult after an incident at a treatment facility.

RICHLAND COUNTY, S.C. — A Columbia man faces charges of abusing a vulnerable adult after an incident at a treatment facility, according to the S.C. Law Enforcement Division.

Agents report that Jaquon Malik Benton, 27, was a custody officer for Wellpath Recovery in March when he shoved the victim backward into a counter and then “forcefully threw” the victim onto the floor, causing injuries that needed medical treatment.

Authorities state that the victim was a resident at Wellpath Recovery Solutions and was a vulnerable adult.

The allegations were confirmed through interviews and surveillance video, agents say.

According to its website, “Wellpath has more than 20 years of experience operating civil and forensic state hospitals, inpatient and residential treatment facilities, sex offender treatment, and competency restoration programs in California, Colorado, Florida, Massachusetts, South Carolina, Texas, and Washington.”

The 5th Circuit Solicitor’s Office will prosecute the case.
