Actress from ‘Furiosa’ reveals Alabama native husband proposed on ‘Forrest Gump’ bench

It seems that life truly imitated art for “Furiosa” star Anya Taylor-Joy when she received a marriage proposal from a romantic partner with ties to Alabama. The proposal was akin to the famous line from the movie “Forrest Gump” – life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

Actress Taylor-Joy gained immense popularity for her central role in the Netflix series “Queen’s Gambit” and also starred in the prequel of “Mad Max: Fury Road,” titled “Furiosa.” In 2022, Taylor-Joy tied the knot with Malcolm McRae, a musician and model hailing from Birmingham. The couple exchanged vows in a private ceremony in New Orleans, followed by a grand celebration in Venice in 2023.

Taylor-Joy recently shared a sweet story about how she received a surprise proposal from McRae. It happened accidentally when they were sitting on a bench in Savannah, Georgia. Interestingly, the bench they were sitting on was a famous landmark from the movie “Forrest Gump.”

During an appearance on the film enthusiast site Letterboxd, actress Anya Taylor-Joy revealed her favorite films in the “Four Favorites” segment hosted by actor Chris Hemsworth. Among her top picks was the Tom Hanks classic, “Forrest Gump,” which tells the story of a lovable Alabama man with a fortunate life.

Hemsworth inquired, “Was there something extraordinary that took place on the Forrest Gump bench?”

Taylor-Joy confirmed that her husband proposed to her by accident on the Forrest Gump bench in Savannah. She shared that her husband is from Alabama and she is blonde, which made the coincidence even more amusing.

The actress expressed her emotional response to music, stating, “When I hear that music, I cry like a baby.”

In his statement, Hemsworth took the opportunity to promote his “Thor” movies. As for the accidental proposal that McRae made, Anya-Taylor did not go into detail about how it happened. However, as fans of “Forrest Gump” know, sometimes happy accidents just happen.

Taylor-Joy has a lot on her plate with upcoming projects, including her role in the action-romance film “The Gorge.” McRae, on the other hand, has been busy with his band more*, which has released two EPs. In addition, he has reportedly landed a secondary role in a film based on the life of musician Jeff Buckley.

Savannah.com reports that the scenes featuring park benches in the movie “Forrest Gump” were filmed in Chippewa Square in the city. The site reveals that during filming, filmmakers used a minimum of four fiberglass benches for these scenes, and one of them was gifted to the city and relocated to a museum.
