AC systems in Texas face extreme strain: Learn warning signs and tips to maintain peak performance during rising temperature

In Austin, Texas, we’re approaching the season when AC units work overtime every day for the next few months. For those neglecting proper maintenance, this could lead to costly consequences.

“The AC systems really take a beating in Texas,” noted Joshua Bronsted, service manager at Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning, and Electrical. “It really wears them down.”

Bronstead emphasized that this period marks the peak season for HVAC companies, often due to neglect of preventative care by homeowners.

According to Bronstead, regular upkeep of AC units can yield significant savings of both time and money in the long term.

He advised homeowners to watch out for several common signs indicating potential issues with their systems:

Bronstead stressed that basic AC maintenance is straightforward and can often be handled independently. “Cleaning the condenser outside and changing filters are crucial,” he explained. “A simple $7 filter change can prevent a $15,000 AC system from failing. Flushing drain lines with vinegar and water can also prevent common issues like clogs and inadequate cooling due to dirty condensers.”

He cautioned against ignoring problems until a system breakdown occurs, as repairs can sometimes run into thousands of dollars. Bronstead recommended replacing filters monthly, which is a cost-effective practice. Given that AC units typically account for a substantial portion of energy bills, keeping them well-maintained can lead to significant monthly savings.

“Well-maintained systems can cut your electric bill by 15% to 30% each month, so it’s crucial to keep everything in good working order,” Bronstead emphasized.

He advised having professionals inspect AC units every six months to prevent breakdowns and ensure optimal performance.
