A woman in Virginia Beach was brutally beaten with a brick, and the man responsible for the attack has been sentenced to 21 years in prison. The sentence was handed down this week, as the victim continues to recover from her injuries. In February, Bobby Bland, aged 63, pleaded guilty.
Less than a week after the victim had evicted Bland from her home in the Witchduck area of Virginia Beach, the attack took place on Oct. 23, 2023.
Upon hearing the victim’s cries for help, Jessica Randolph and her son J’Mari Randolph, who were neighbors, quickly sprang into action.
According to J’Mari, he witnessed Bobby throwing the phone of the victim on the ground, and the situation suddenly became quiet. He decided to intervene and walked around the car, only to see Bobby hitting the victim with a brick. J’Mari immediately told Bobby to stop the attack.

According to Randolph, he made it clear that he had no intention of ceasing his physical abuse towards the woman.
As soon as I saw the disturbing scene unfolding, a sense of urgency rushed through me. Without hesitation, I firmly told the aggressor to stop what he was doing and get off the victim. It took some time for him to listen to me, but eventually, he complied after I pulled out my firearm.
Randolph kept Bland under his gun’s sight until the police arrived.
His mother immediately dialed 9-1-1 as soon as she became aware of the situation. After her son had successfully subdued Bland, she assisted the victim until emergency responders arrived on the scene to provide medical attention.
The victim was able to survive the attack; however, as reported by the commonwealth’s attorney, she sustained lacerations to her head, a brain bleed and injuries to her fingers.

According to the Randolphs, they didn’t have a close relationship with their neighbor before the incident that occurred in October. However, Jessica mentioned that the event brought them closer together.
According to J’Mari, the victim has not been in touch. However, he mentioned that she expressed immense gratitude.
J’Mari expressed that his act of kindness towards the person in need was greatly appreciated. According to him, he simply wanted to extend help as he would have wanted someone to do the same for him if he were in a similar situation. The person he helped continues to express her gratitude towards him, often thanking him and giving him hugs whenever they meet.
Bland received a sentence for committing malicious wounding, breaking into a building with the intention of committing rape, robbery, murder, or arson, and for assault and battery.
In a decision that went beyond the Virginia State Sentencing Guidelines, Circuit Court Judge Steven C. Mahan handed down a sentence of 20 years and 12 months in prison to Bland. This sentence was significantly higher than the recommended sentence of five years and ten months, showing the severity of the crime committed.
