Starting in January 2025, most non-commercial vehicle owners in Texas will no longer need to complete a safety inspection as part of their yearly registration process. Instead, drivers will pay a $7.50 inspection replacement fee, while new vehicles will be charged $16.75 for a two-year fee.
Commercial vehicles used for trade and commerce will still be required to undergo an annual inspection but will not be subject to the inspection replacement fee.
In some Texas counties, an annual emissions test will still be required to help control metropolitan pollution. These counties include:
Brazoria, Fort Bend, Galveston, Harris, Montgomery, Collin, Dallas, Denton, Ellis, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwall, Tarrant, Travis, Williamson, and El Paso.
Bexar County will join the list in 2026.
