Residents in Hartford, Conn. have taken to forming armed patrols in response to the rising crime rates in the area. However, the town’s officials have dismissed the efforts of these concerned citizens who are simply trying to protect themselves and their community.
In Hartford’s North End, a group of roughly 40 legally armed citizens have formed a “Self-Defense Brigade” at the behest of local religious leader Archbishop Dexter Burke. This brigade is dedicated to protecting the streets of the predominantly black neighborhood.
Having witnessed two men being murdered near his church in February, Burke finally reached his breaking point.
It’s no surprise that Hartford, a town with a population of approximately 121,000, experienced a significant increase in violent crime over the past two years. In 2023, the town reported a staggering 36 murders, while the previous year saw 40 killings – the highest in almost 20 years.
If we were to measure murder rates on a per capita basis, 36 murders in a particular location would be equivalent to 2,456 homicides in New York.
It’s no surprise that individuals are taking action to safeguard their communities.
Police officers are taking responsibility by wearing body cameras during their patrols and supplementing the neighborhood watch with the use of drones.
According to the mayor, Arunan Arulampalam, instead of taking matters into their own hands by carrying guns and causing more pain and trauma, what the community truly needs is for those who love the city to collectively work towards healing the existing wounds. He believes that relying on vigilante justice will only exacerbate the problem and that it is time to come together and find a peaceful solution.
The nonsensical chatter is consistent with the mindset that has contributed to the calamity in Hartford: Connecticut has adopted misguided policies akin to New York’s outrageous criminal justice “reforms,” such as the “Raise the Age” statute and limitations on bail.
Hartford’s high homicide rate shouldn’t come as a shock.
Did you know that black citizens, despite making up only 10% of Connecticut’s population, make up over half of its gun homicide victims? However, they are now taking action to secure their own neighborhoods.
It’s up to Mayor Arulampalam to address the concerns of the public he serves, as they feel threatened under his watch. Despite any complaints he may have, it’s important for him to take action and ensure the safety and well-being of his constituents.
For goodness’ sake, he is the mayor!
As we look towards the upcoming election, it is important to remember that our Mayor, Adams, takes full responsibility for public safety. Despite facing opposition from progressive candidates like state Sen. Zellnor Myrie, Mayor Adams remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. Let us not forget this as we consider our choices for the next election.
As residents of New York City and other areas governed by progressive leaders, it’s imperative that we question our support for pro-crime politicians and their policies. If we continue to tolerate their actions, how long until we are forced to form our own self-defense groups? It’s time to take a stand and reject those who prioritize criminals over law-abiding citizens.
