Shomari Figures, who is running for the Democratic nomination in the 2nd congressional district race, has refused to comment on whether President Joe Biden is mentally fit to run for re-election. Despite being prompted by his Republican opponent during a recent exchange, Figures declined to offer his opinion on the matter.
On Monday, Republican Caroleene Dobson criticized Figures for remaining quiet on Biden’s mental competency. This comes after his lackluster debate performance against former President Donald Trump, who is the GOP nominee.
In a statement, Dobson expressed his concerns about the White House becoming a replica of the movie ‘Weekend at Bernie’s’ after witnessing the disastrous debate performance. He urged Figures to speak up and share his opinion on whether Biden is capable of serving another term. Dobson also criticized Figures for not commenting on Biden, stating that it is a sign of cowardice rather than leadership.
When contacted by AL.com on Tuesday, Figures declined to comment and referred to his previous statements.
According to AL.com, Figures expressed confidence in the voters of the 2nd congressional district, stating that they have a positive outlook and will choose him to work alongside President Biden. He praised the President for his successful efforts in job creation and infrastructure development, such as expanding broadband access and rebuilding transportation systems.
According to Alabama Daily News, Figures reiterated that the election is not solely determined by one debate performance and emphasized that there are many other factors at play. Additionally, he commended the president’s track record.
In her speech on Monday, Dobson took aim at Biden’s record in office, citing the significant rise in inflation and the resulting sticker shock experienced by Americans when purchasing groceries and fuel. Dobson also expressed concern about the open borders policy, which she believes poses a threat to both the national security and the economy.
According to Dobson, concerns have been raised about Biden’s mental capacity to hold office ever since former Special Counsel Robert Hur released a report in February. The report described the President as “a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”
It has been several months since concerns about Biden’s mental state began to arise, but Shomari Figures has chosen to ignore them completely. He has refused to acknowledge the possible implications of having a leader who may not be in full control of his mental faculties.
According to Dobson, the captain leading the state is incompetent. Dobson questions how voters can trust the captain to make tough decisions that are required of members of Congress if he cannot take a clear stance on a simple issue like this.
Last week, GOP presidential nominee and former President Donald Trump received criticism for his debate performance, with some noting that it was rife with falsehoods. In addition to this, Trump also made accusations about Dobson and lumped him in with those who lie about their backgrounds and opponents. These accusations included misrepresentations about Dobson’s own background and his opponent, former state Sen. Dick Brewbaker, whom Dobson defeated in the GOP runoff race on April 16.
Figures expressed that the District does not desire a representative or president who spreads misinformation, hate, lies, and conspiracy theories. The district rejected Trump in 2020 and is expected to do the same this year. Dobson seems unconcerned that her party’s nominee is a pathological liar who incited an assault on our democracy.
