An Uber driver in Cottage City, Maryland, who was shot multiple times on New Year’s Day, has sadly passed away from his injuries, according to authorities.
The victim of the incident has been identified by Prince George’s County Police as Oluwatosin Adetula, a 36-year-old resident of Hyattsville.
Adetula, a rideshare driver, sustained multiple gunshot wounds in the 3300 block of Bladensburg Road at 10:40 p.m. on January 1. Officers found him in a parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds. He was brought to the hospital in critical condition but died of his injuries six days later on January 7.
The investigation into the incident is currently being led by the Homicide Unit of the Prince George’s County Police Department. The case is still ongoing, as detectives continue their search for a motive and potential suspect(s).
The family portrayed Adetula as a diligent man and a recent father to a 4-month-old child. As per a law enforcement source, Adetula was conversing with a relative over the phone moments before the shooting occurred.
The relative reportedly heard the suspect demand that Adetula “turn down the radio” followed by the victim’s plea, “Please don’t shoot me,” before gunfire erupted.
Investigators have not yet determined whether Adetula was specifically targeted, if the incident was a robbery, or if the suspect was a rideshare passenger. However, shell casings were recovered from the scene, providing potential evidence for further investigation.
