Matthew McConaughey’s presence is hard to ignore in Texas. The Hollywood star, a Texas native, is known for his love of supporting the Texas Longhorns and for his significant contributions to various charities.
In recent years, there have been whispers about McConaughey possibly entering the political scene, with many wondering if he might run for governor of Texas.
At a recent event in Austin, McConaughey addressed the topic during a Q&A session when asked if he had any intentions of running for governor.
Matthew McConaughey Responds to Running for Governor
This isn’t the first time McConaughey has been asked about a political career. In fact, back in 2021, he appeared on a podcast where he didn’t rule out the possibility of running. However, by the end of 2021, McConaughey made it clear that he would not run, leaving many fans disappointed as they had hoped he would be the ideal candidate for the state’s leadership.
During the Texas Book Festival on Sunday, November 17, McConaughey was again asked if he might run for governor. His response was a firm “no.” He shared that he’s relishing his role as a father and wants to fully embrace the opportunity of raising his three kids.

When Hollywood director Richard Linklater, who was moderating the session, asked when his youngest child would be heading off to college, McConaughey replied, “six years.” Linklater joked, “Come back in six years,” which got a great reaction from the audience.
While the audio could be clearer, you can still hear McConaughey’s response and the crowd’s reaction to Linklater’s comment.
Dreams Won’t Be Realized…Yet
For those hoping to see McConaughey as governor of Texas, it looks like they’ll have to wait at least six more years. Who knows, by then, he might just prefer to relax on a beach and enjoy a well-earned retirement.
