According to the Hualapai Nation Police Department, two people suspected of involvement in train robberies in Arizona were apprehended on Thursday and found to be in the country illegally.
According to officials and court documents obtained by the Associated Press, thieves have targeted freight trains running through the deserts of Arizona and California in a series of heists, stealing more than $2 million in new Nike sneakers, including many that have not yet hit the retail market.
On Thursday, Hualapai Nation police stopped an SUV suspected of being involved in the robberies, and eight people fled the area. The police seized the male driver and discovered Nike shoes near the vehicle.
Police reported that they stopped another SUV under the “move over” legislation for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle while that inquiry was underway. According to officials, the lady driver was ordered to get out of the car after police discovered evidence from the train robberies, and she did so before returning to the SUV and driving away. The vehicle apparently hit an officer, but he was uninjured.
Police claimed they pursued the man for roughly 80 miles on I-40 near the Arizona-California border. In a construction zone, officials say the woman lost control of the SUV and ejected from it. She only sustained minor injuries and was sent to a local hospital for treatment.
Both were discovered to be in the US illegally. They were booked into the Mohave County Detention Center on suspicion of participating in the robberies, according to Hualapai Nation police.
Uncertainty surrounds the apprehending of the eight individuals who fled the area.
