A tragic incident unfolded in Chicago as a man lost his life and 15 others were left injured in a series of shootings on New Year’s Day.
The first homicide of the year 2025 occurred in the early morning at the Princeton Park neighborhood. Law enforcement officers discovered a 29-year-old man who had been shot twice on South Harvard Avenue in the 9400 block. Sadly, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. At present, the Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released the identity of the deceased individual.
On January 1, 2025, there were several other shootings reported in the Chicago area. Here is a list of those incidents:

- Around 2 a.m., a 29-year-old man was riding in a car when he was shot once in the leg in the 1600 block of West Division Street in Wicker Park. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.
- Roughly half an hour later, a 33-year-old woman was shot in the hand while riding in a car in the 500 block of South Kostner Avenue in West Garfield Park. She took herself to Mount Sinai Hospital where she was listed in good condition.
- Around 2:47 a.m., a 44-year-old man was shot inside a residence in the 3100 block of South Green Street in Bridgeport. Paramedics took him to Stroger Hospital where he was listed in fair condition.
- Minutes later, a 43-year-old woman was shot several times during an argument inside a North Lawndale residence in the 1200 block of South Sawyer Avenue. The victim was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. Police arrested a 38-year-old man near the scene of the shooting.
- Around 3 a.m., a 22-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman got into an argument with two people inside a residence in the 4200 block of West Wilcox Avenue. One of the suspects shot the man in the shoulder. The woman took the victim to Cook County Hospital where he was listed in good condition.
- Around 3:05 a.m., a 30-year-old man was shot in the face by someone in a red vehicle in the 4500 block of South Champlain Avenue in Bronzeville. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition.
- Around 3:10 a.m., a 46-year-old man was shot while standing outside in the 7000 block of South Eberhart in Park Manor. Officers arrested a 32-year-old man who tried to flee the scene. The victim was listed in good condition at the University of Chicago Hospital.
- A 22-year-old man was shot once in the leg around 3:30 a.m. in an Englewood home in the 6600 block of South State Street. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital where he was listed in fair condition.
- Around 4:20 a.m., a 24-year-old was shot in the ankle while inside a West Englewood residence in the 6900 block of South Hoyne Avenue. He self-transported to Holy Cross Hospital in good condition.
- Around 4:25 a.m., a 36-year-old woman was shot while she was inside a home in the 13100 block of South Ingleside Avenue in Altgeld Gardens. She was also taken to U of C Hospital in fair condition.
- A 42-year-old woman was shot around 4:30 a.m. in the lobby of an Austin apartment complex in the first block of North Latrobe Avenue. She was transported to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
- Around 8:13 a.m., a 27-year-old man was shot while getting out of a vehicle in the 5600 block of South Throop Street in Englewood. He was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital in good condition.
- A 20-year-old man self-transported to Stroger Hospital after being shot at an unknown time and location in Chicago, police said. He said shots came from a black SUV and struck him in the arm. He was listed in good condition.
- Just after 12:30 p.m., a 51-year-old man was inside a retail store in the 7500 block of S. Racine when he was confronted by two male suspects. One suspect pulled a gun and demanded the man’s property and the second suspect shot the victim in the chest and right leg, police said. The victim was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital and is in critical condition. No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.
- Around 2:56 p.m., a 35-year-old man sustained a graze wound from a bullet while standing on the sidewalk in the 4900 block of W. Barry in Cragin, police said. He declined medical attention and no arrests have been made. The investigation is ongoing.
In 2024, Chicago witnessed a total of 572 homicides, which was 43 fewer compared to the previous year’s count of 615.
“While this year’s work proves progress, we know there’s still more work to be done,” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said Tuesday. “We will build on these efforts and double down on the work that we’ve accomplished in 2024 and 2023. And to ensure success, it’s going to take continued efforts from all of us across the city.”
The mayor has set an ambitious goal for 2025: reducing homicides to less than 500, a number that hasn’t been witnessed in Chicago since 2015.
